The Word Dwelling Richly

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16).  If we want to experience the comfort and encouragement that God’s word is able to empart to us, it must be dwelling in our hearts, ready to be used on any occasion.  The advantage this gives us in the spiritual life is manifold.  First of all, faith requires fuel just as a fire does.  Faith is fueled by the promises of Scripture.  We will not be able to exercise faith if we do not have a store of promises ready to use.  The same is true of prayer.  The influences of the Holy Spirit are intimately connected with the indwelling of Christ’s words.  Promises hold up our hearts in prayer.  When you are alone and no other means of grace is available, the word treasured in the heart will be there to encourage you.  A Christian with a heart filled with truth will be ready to speak to others, and will not be held back by self-consciousness.  The difference this can make in your relationships with others is phenomenal!  Every part of life will find benefit.
